Moving On

So we move forward.....

I greatly appreciate all your emails, opinions, and comments.  This is definitely not how I expected this week to go.  I'm sure I'll be having a few more of those conversations with myself until I can fully put it aside.

....but I need to keep going. Nothing like a little bit of controversy to get that creative juice flowing!

This is just a peek in the sketchbook of the new project I'm working through.

Looking at how to use a drape within a piece that will either close off a view or reveal.

Of course I think my personal work will have different connotations....but on a more neutral level I was thinking of  a school project that corresponds with the changing of the seasons.

Maybe it's the cool weather the last few days here in Calgary but I can already sense that moment coming.....

.......when you see that first tree starting to change and it hits you like a ton of bricks......

(please excuse the hasty sketch) This is where it usually occurs to me as I'm driving by a nearby park.

So I'm just putting on the final touches on the school version and hope to show you the complete tutorial shortly.

Thanks again for all support and kind words that you passed along I was overwhelmed to say the least!

  1. oh my gosh Gail, I refuse to excuse your 'hasty' sketch because I love it! I totally love it :)
And I'm so glad that so many reached out to you with kind emails about the 'controversial' post. I wanted to send you one but haven't had the energy. Good energy beaming your way. I saw the post via RSS and thought it was wonderful and respectful and could encourage kids to be curious about a culture not their own.

  2. I love your watercolor sketches, Gail. You have a very good eye and style.
I have commented before, but will do so again to encourage you-your blog and tutorials have been of great value to me as new art teacher for elementary school children.
I couldn't figure out what all the controversy was about the post you removed. As a teacher and fellow artist, it doesn't make sense to me to be offended by what you posted. However, I read through about 45 comments to enlighten myself. So I give you my support, your intentions are all the best I am sure. And your blog is really a great contribution to art and teaching.

Keep up the fantastic art work that you are doing...!!!! I found absolutely no wrong in what you did. There will be those who will find fault when none is there to find... This is your site, and your reply post was well put. Don't let this detour you from creating and posting other cultural art ideas. I'm Italian...if you want to do something italian....I would be thrilled....
On that note, so should the culture you chose to highlight... I always have liked their art form, and wondered how I could attempt trying it....
I love how clear and easy your instructions are...
Again, may I encourage you to post your ideas and artistic visions with us....If some are offended, they should leave the site...

  5. I am not going to backtrack to figure out what happened. I do want you to know that I appreciate your ideas, I appreciate your willingness to share with those of us that are new to teaching others how to release their creative energy. I have found so many great tutorials on your site that have helped me in teaching teens at risk. Like I told my children growing up.... act like a duck and let it roll right off your back.

  6. Sigh. I just read through many of the comments around the controversy. I just wanted to tell you that I SO appreciate all you do here on your blog! It is such a blessing to me and my family!

And, FWIW -- I would be THRILLED to produce "rough sketches" as awesome as yours!!!!!

You are an inspiration, Gail! Keep up the good work!
